Become a Coach
To coach in BC minor hockey, you’ll need to complete certain training and certifications based on your coaching role and the age level. You can find your specific requirements by visiting the BC Hockey Be a Coach page and selecting:
- Level of Play (U7, U9, etc.)
- Category of Play (Recreation or Carded [Dev/Rep])
- Role (Head Coach or Assistant Coach)
Once you use the drop down boxes to make your selections, the required courses will be shown on the screen.
Course Info and Requirements
All coaches, regardless of their level of coaching, must complete Respect in Sport – Activity Leader, Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT), and a Criminal Record Check. Coaches of younger players must complete Hockey Canada’s Coach 1 course, while coaches of older players must complete Hockey Canada’s Coach 2 course.
Most coaches will need to complete some or all of the following:
- Criminal Record Check (CRC)
- Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders
- Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT)
- Making Ethical Decisions (MED)
- Coach 1 (for U7/U9) or Coach 2 (for U11/U13–U21 Recreational)
- Development 1 (for Competitive/Dev/Rep/Carded coaches)
- Skills – Checking Clinic (for U11/U13/U15 Head Coaches)
BC Hockey clinics are available for registration. Visit the Hockey Canada clinic portal to sign up.
How to Submit your Proof of Completion
Once you’ve completed your required coaching courses/certifications, please submit your proof of completion to the NOMHA Registrar so we can verify your status.
Here’s how:
- Save your proof: This can be a PDF of your course certificate, a screenshot of your completed status, or a confirmation email showing successful completion.
- Write an email: Include your full name, the team or age division/program you’re coaching, and a list of the completed items you’re submitting.
- Send to the Registrar: Email your documentation to register@nomha.com.
You’ll receive confirmation from the NOMHA Registrar once your records are updated. Reimbursement will be processed after verification.
Reimbursement for Course Fees
NOMHA fully reimburses all required course fees for coaches. This includes registration costs for:
- Hockey Canada coaching clinics
- Criminal record checks
- Respect in Sport certification
- CATT certification
- Making Ethical Decisions training
Reimbursement is issued after course completion and certification. Please retain your receipts and email them to the Registrar (register@nomha.com) once you’ve finished your training.
Deadline for Certification
All coaching requirements, including training and criminal record checks, must be completed by December 1st of the on-ice season.
