Referees

Referees (also known as officials) are a vital part of the game. They keep play safe, fair, and respectful, helping young athletes enjoy the sport and grow as players. North Okanagan Minor Hockey Association (NOMHA) welcomes new and returning officials of all ages to join our officiating team.

Becoming a Referee

Anyone aged 12 and up can become a certified hockey official. Officiating is a great way for youth and adults to:

  • Learn the rules of the game more deeply
  • Gain leadership and decision-making experience
  • Earn extra income during the hockey season
  • Stay involved in the game in a different role

Referees must complete an officiating program to become certified. Typically this includes online coursework and an in-person certification officiating clinic. Referees over age 18 must also complete a Criminal Record Check.

Visit the BC Hockey Officiating Certification page for more information.

Equipment required

Officials must provide their own gear, including:

  • CSA-approved black helmet
  • Half visor (mandatory for all officials)
  • Referee jersey with Hockey Canada crest
  • Whistle
  • Black pants (or official referee pants)
  • Black skates

You’ll also need a Hockey Canada Registry ID (HCR ID) number.

Referee support

NOMHA provides mentorship and guidance for new officials. If you’re just starting out, our Referee-in-Chief or other senior officials can help you get set up, build confidence, and improve your skills throughout the season.

Officials are paid per game, based on the age level and tier. Payment details and rates are available from the Referee-in-Chief.
