SUBJECT: 2018-19 Zone Program Proposal
For the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, the BC Hockey Board of Directors approved pilot projects to study the viability of zone programming in Minor Hockey. The East Kootenay, Okanagan, and Yukon Districts are operating a Zone Program and discussions are on-going in other Districts to implement the Pilot Program.
Opportunities for player development currently exists with multiple options for players which include Zone Programming, Hockey Canada Sport Schools, BC Major Midget League, Junior B, Junior A and Major Junior.
The success of the Zone Pilot Program has allowed for the first step to take place for Minor Hockey Associations to transition their focus to grass roots development and player recruitment. The Zone Program will allow participants to access elite programming within a refocused minor hockey structure.
The attached document outlines the proposal to address the player development model and increased options for players at the elite hockey level. Based on the model outlined within the proposal, the following long-term approach has been presented for consideration:
i. A consideration is to include Major Pee Wee for implementation in the 2019-2020 season. At this time the Pee Wee model is presented as a concept.
